Economic aspects such as comparison with alternative processes

Characteristics of laser beams
The prominent characteristics of laser beams are on the one hand that they can be focused onto fragments of one millimetre (allowing precise, fine work) and on the other hand the possibility of working materials without touching them (avoiding any undesirable effects of forces on the materials). In addition, the high effective depth in relation to the effective width often plays an important role, as this means that the delay resulting from thermal effects is very small. Wherever these characteristics constitute a significant advantage, laser will generally be preferable.

Economic considerations
In relation to the question of whether a process is more economical by laser, besides the geometrical considerations in relation to the desired process, the material characteristics are above all of particular interest. Even with the most varied wavelengths, some materials are particularly well suited, and others are not. Glass, marble etc. are often better worked with water jet methods. Despite all the advances in developing laser processing, it should not be forgotten that one is dealing with a thermal process.
It is particularly important in making this calculation to include all other factors such as extraction with filters and cooling equipment, as well as to take into account the ongoing operating and maintenance costs.
